The size that still fits everything

A 5 × 7 recipe card is the size that keeps working: the wooden box on the counter, the sleeve in a binder, the frame in the kitchen, the envelope with a gift. It is small enough to keep and large enough for a full ingredient list without shrinking the method into a caption.

Cards made here are landscape — 7 inches wide and 5 inches tall — a white page with no background art, the title and body set in the faces you choose, and the instructions written in short paragraphs rather than a list that runs off the edge. You write the recipe, pick the faces, and the card is laid out for you.

There is no design work and no blank template to fill in by hand. The free preview shows the finished card exactly as it prints, watermark and all, before you decide whether to buy it.

Actual size means 100%

A card printed at “fit to page” is not the card you made. Most print dialogs quietly scale a page by a few percent to make room for their own margins, which shrinks the type and eats the white space you left at the edges. Set the dialog to Actual Size, or 100%, and the card comes out at the size on screen.

The file carries the numbers that make that possible. The 5 × 7 landscape card is 7 inches wide and 5 inches tall, which is 504 × 360 points in the PDF’s page box. The 4 × 6 landscape card is 6 inches wide and 4 inches tall, or 432 × 288 points. Because the size is declared inside the file, a print shop reads it and prints the card instead of assuming Letter.

Choosing between the two

Both sizes are landscape and both are white, so the difference is room. A 4 × 6 holds a short recipe comfortably and slips into a small envelope or a photo pocket. A 5 × 7 holds a longer ingredient list and a method with more steps, and it is the size a standard frame takes, which is what makes it the one people print as a gift.

The safe order is to make the card at 5 × 7 first. If it turns out short, switch the finished card to 4 × 6 before you download and nothing is lost — the recipe is unchanged, only the page shape.

Ten page sizes, one recipe

Fonts are the other half of a landscape card. The title is set in one face and everything else — the details line, the ingredients, the steps — in another, so a script title can sit above a plain body that stays readable at arm’s length. Ten faces are available, both halves can be changed after the recipe is in, and the instructions print as short paragraphs rather than a numbered list that wraps badly at this width.

Cards are not the only size. The same recipe can be rendered as any of 10 page sizes: US Letter and its landscape version, A4, A5, Half Letter, 8 × 10 photo, 6 × 9 book page, the 5 × 7 recipe card, the 4 × 6 landscape card, and an 8 × 8 square print. Keep a 5 × 7 for the box and a full Letter sheet for the kitchen folder, and print both from the same recipe.

5 × 7 recipe card questions

What is actual size?

Landscape cards print at their exact size, so choose Actual Size or 100% in the print dialog and never Fit to Page, which shrinks the card a few percent and takes the margins with it. The 5 × 7 landscape card is 7 × 5 inches — 504 × 360 points in the PDF’s page box. The 4 × 6 landscape card is 6 × 4 inches, or 432 × 288 points.

4 × 6 or 5 × 7?

Both are landscape and both are a white page with no background art. The 4 × 6 is the smaller card: it suits a short recipe and tucks into a small envelope or a photo pocket. The 5 × 7 holds a longer ingredient list and a method with more steps, and it fits a standard frame, which is why it is the one people gift.

What DPI are the files?

300 dpi, as a PDF for printing, a JPG for sharing and a PNG when you want the most detail. The type is drawn at that resolution rather than scaled up, so the amounts stay sharp at card size.

What does $1 get me?

Your first clean (watermark-free) page, one-time special, with the 300 dpi PDF, JPG and PNG of one card in the size you chose. After that a single clean page is $1.99 per recipe.
